Ghana Boxing Authority President Abraham Kotei Neequaye has expressed his belief that the Ministry of Sports and Recreation does not require a deputy minister. This follows President John Dramani Mahama’s nomination of Kofi Adams as the Minister-designate for the sports sector.
Kofi Adams is set to undergo vetting to officially assume the role, replacing Mustapha Ussif, who has served as Sports Minister since 2021 under the New Patriotic Party government led by Nana Akufo-Addo.
If approved, Kofi Adams will become Ghana’s 28th Sports Minister since 1978.
However, Kotei Neequaye argues that appointing a deputy minister would be unnecessary; suggesting instead that the various sports stakeholders Kofi Adams will collaborate with should effectively serve in that capacity.
He said this in an interview with Citi Sports on Wednesday, Jan 22, 2025, following the appointment of Kofi Adams as the Minister Designate for the Ministry of Sports & Recreation.
The decision of the President, don’t forget the man [John Dramani Mahama] has been a President before.

Now the minister will understand that my deputies are the federation heads. My deputies will be the sports authority. So then you need to work with the people, you understand.
Because if you don’t have that deputy that you think, oh I can put this one in. Definitely you have a lot of deputies under you in a way, you understand. So it’s a good decision.
