Ghana’s National Women’s Football Team, the Black Queens, have the chance to reap the bumper financial benefits from competing in this year’s CAF Women’s AFCON in the wake of a significant increase in prize money for the tournament.
The Black Queens are set to open their campaign in the competition with a Group C tie against defending champions South Africa slated for Monday, July 7 at 16:00 GMT.
In the lead up to the big game, CAF announced that the prize money for winning the championship has been increased to a million dollars.
The first runner-up, second runner-up and fourth placed nations will receive $500,000, $350,000 and $300,000 respectively.
12 nations are competing in the tournament that commenced on July 5 and is scheduled to end on July 26 in Morocco. Host nation Morocco drew 2-2 with Zambia in the opening game.

Ghana returns to the Women’s AFCON after missing out on the last edition and is aiming to make it past the group stage for the first time since 2016.

Official jersey numbers have been handed out to the Black Queens with standouts Doris Boaduwaa, Evelyn Badu and Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah handed jersey number 9, 13 and 8 respectively.
