Sudan National Men’s Football Team head coach James Kwesi Appiah is betting big on the momentum of his team after seeing Sudan start slowly but recover well to qualify surprisingly to the quarterfinals of the ongoing CHAN tournament.

The CHAN is an African championship eligible to players competing in their respective national football leagues and despite assembling just four days prior to the start of the competition, Sudan topped Group D ahead of power house Nigeria and defending champions Senegal.

Sudan drew 1-1 with Congo after conceding a late goal and proceeded to hammer Nigeria 4-0 before drawing goalless with Senegal to top the group via goal difference.

Speaking in the post-game interview, Appiah spoke about his team’s pragmatic approach in the tournament ahead of its quarterfinal clash against Algeria on Saturday, August 23 at 17:00 GMT.

“We started the competition slowly but progressed to beat Nigeria and grind out a result against Senegal. The more we advance, the better we get. Senegal isn’t a small country in terms of football. I knew we were in for a tough time. We had to sit back and hit on counters” Appiah said.
