Tottenham Hotspur produced a disciplined and ruthless performance to defeat Premier league  champions Manchester City 2-0 at the Etihad on Saturday, climbing to the top of the Premier League table.

City dominated possession and started brightly, with Erling Haaland and Omar Marmoush combining well to threaten Spurs’ defence in the opening stages.

Marmoush, in particular, looked sharp, forcing goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario into two smart saves. But for all their pressure, Pep Guardiola’s men lacked the finishing touch.

The visitors, meanwhile, were happy to absorb pressure and hit on the counter. And it was from one such break that they broke the deadlock in the 35th minute.

Pape Matar Sarr flicked the ball into the path of Richarlison, who sprinted clear and squared for Brennan Johnson. The Welsh forward kept his composure to slot past James Trafford, with VAR confirming the goal despite a close offside call.

City looked rattled, and their problems deepened just before half-time. Trafford’s misplaced pass to González inside his own box was punished by Spurs’ pressing game, with Richarlison stealing in to force a loose ball that fell kindly for João Palhinha.

The Portuguese midfielder made no mistake, calmly rolling the ball into the net to give Spurs a 2-0 lead at the break.

Guardiola responded with a flurry of changes in the second half, introducing Bernardo Silva, Jérémy Doku, Phil Foden and Rodri.

Yet Spurs remained solid at the back, with Micky van de Ven marshalling the defence and Vicario dealing comfortably with City’s few attempts on target. Haaland, unusually quiet, squandered a rare chance by heading over from close range.

Tottenham, on the other hand, always looked capable of adding a third on the counter. Richarlison went close with two headers, while substitutes Dominic Solanke and Wilson Odobert forced Trafford into late saves. By the closing minutes, frustration had set in among the home fans, with sections of the Etihad emptying as Spurs supporters sang “it’s happened again.”

The result leaves Guardiola with plenty to ponder as City’s attack looked blunt despite their wealth of attacking talent.

For Tottenham, however, this was another statement victory under Ange Postecoglou, who has now guided his team to the top of the Premier League with their second clean sheet of the season.
