Norwegian men’s tennis player Casper Ruud is not happy about New York’s laws regarding smoking of marijuana particularly in close proximity to players competing in the US Open.
This year’s US Open commenced on August 18 and is scheduled to end on September 8 in New York City with Jannik Sinner as the defending champion in the men’s category; Aryna Sabalenka is the defending champion in the women’s category.
In his post-game interview after securing a first round win over Sebastian Ofner via a 6-1, 6-2, 7-6 result, Ruud sounded off on people smoking marijuana close to the players.
“For me, this is the worst thing about New York. The smell is everywhere, even here on the courts. We have to accept it, but it’s not my favourite smell. It’s quite annoying to be playing, tired, and just a few metres away, someone is smoking marijuana.

“We can’t do anything about it unless the law is reversed, but I have strong doubts that will happen” Rudd said according to the New York Post.

The State of New York passed the recreational use of marijuana in 2021. Ruud takes on Belgian Raphael Collignon in the second round on Wednesday, August 27.
