Portugal’s dreams of making it three wins in three games in the ongoing European qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup were almost dashed prior to Ruben Neves’ heroics with Cristiano Ronaldo missing his penalty kick attempt.

Neves scored in the first minute of added on time to give Portugal a 1-0 win over Ireland who battled away gallantly in Lisbon only to be undone by the late Portugal goal.

Ireland goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher saved Ronaldo’s penalty in the 75th minute in what looked to be the standout moment in the game before Francisco Trincao found Neves for the goal.

Portugal hold a five point lead over second ranked Hungary after winning all three games and a win over Hungary on Tuesday, October 14 is very likely to seal Portugal’s place in next year’s World Cup.

Speaking on the tough game against Ireland according Irish media outlet, IrishExaminer, Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez said,

“We expected that type of performance from Ireland. We weren’t surprised by their tactics, only their capacity to be aggressive and defend so well. It was incredible solidarity from the players” Martinez said.
