Nigeria’s chances of competing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup are alive after progressing to the CAF Playoff Final where a win qualifies the Super Eagles to the intercontinental playoffs.
The Super Eagles trounced Gabon 4-1 in the playoff semifinals played at Rabat in Morocco with Nigeria scoring three goals in extra time after the game ended 1-1 after regulation time.
Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen scored twice in the win to set Nigeria up for the final against the Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday, November 16. DR Congo beat Cameroon 1-0 via Chancel Mbemba goal in the 91st minute of their matchup.
Nigeria’s preparations for the tie against Gabon were rocked by a boycott over unpaid bonuses to the team but speaking after the win, Osimhen said he was happy with the team’s mentality.
“I’m happy about the mentality of the team all of us. I think we deserve this win.”

“We didn’t take anything from the Gabonese team because they are also good with a lot of quality…but I think we deserved this win and I’m really happy about this win” Osimhen said to RFI.
