Legendary Ghanaian boxer turned promoter Ayitey Powers has stated that today’s generation of boxers has a brighter future compared to those of the past.
His remarks followed the successful staging of the National Individual Amateur Boxing Championship final by the Ghana Boxing Federation at the Bukom Boxing Arena on February 28, 2026.
In an interview with Citi Sports on the sidelines of the event, Ayitey Powers expressed concerns about the level of passion Ghanaians currently show towards boxing, while commending promoters for their efforts to grow the sport.
“If I have something to say, boxing is brighter than the past. Last time, it was a bit more brighter because a lot of people knew their names individually.

“But it looks like this current generation, their love is dead. I can say that boxing is better than the past.
Boxing is better than the past. Because, you know, as some of us, we are in our growth, we are into boxing still. Somebody like me, I’m promoting boxing.“I’m a promoter, promoting boxing and Sharaf Mahama is there, Alex Ntiamoah is there. So, we have a lot of promoters who want to help, to promote. Boxing is bright now and we have a brighter future” he said.

The championship served as the primary selection platform for Ghana’s Black Bombers national amateur boxing team, with the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, scheduled from July 23 to August 2, representing the immediate competitive target.
