Ghanaians planning to travel to the United States to support the Black Stars at the 2026 FIFA World Cup should prepare for significantly higher transportation costs, following reports of a major fare increase on key match routes.

According to The Athletic, New Jersey Transit is planning to charge more than $100 for return train tickets between New York’s Penn Station and MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on matchdays. The 18-mile journey typically costs $12.90 for a return ticket.

The proposed increase represents more than a sevenfold jump in price and is expected to apply specifically to World Cup matchday services.

Officials say the move is aimed at ensuring that the cost of transporting fans during the tournament is not passed on to regular commuters or New Jersey taxpayers. The total cost of providing transport services for the matches is estimated at $48 million.

MetLife Stadium, which will host multiple matches, including the final, is expected to attract tens of thousands of fans, many of whom will rely on rail transport from New York.

The Athletic report also comes amid wider concerns about rising costs linked to the tournament. Similar fare hikes are being planned in other host cities, with rail tickets to Gillette Stadium in Boston reportedly set to rise to $95 as well.

Additionally, reports indicate that the special World Cup pricing could be a flat rate for all passengers, with no reduced fares for children, seniors, or persons with disabilities.

The development highlights growing concerns over the overall cost of attending the World Cup, with transport now joining match tickets, accommodation, and other expenses as a major financial consideration for travelling fans.
