Arne Slot has responded to comments made by Mohamed Salah regarding Liverpool’s style of play, insisting that modern football has evolved while stressing that both men still want what is best for Liverpool FC.
The discussion follows Salah’s recent public remarks where the Egyptian forward called for Liverpool to return to the aggressive “heavy metal football” style associated with former manager Jürgen Klopp.
Salah described the intense, high-pressing attacking identity established under Klopp as the type of football he believes Liverpool should continue to represent.
The forward also admitted it had been painful watching the team struggle in recent defeats, adding that Liverpool’s traditional attacking identity “cannot” disappear and insisting that simply winning matches occasionally is not enough for a club of Liverpool’s stature.
However, speaking ahead of Liverpool’s crucial clash against Brentford in the battle for a Champions League place, Slot pushed back against suggestions that his philosophy clashes with Salah’s vision.
“You are doing a lot of assumptions,” Slot said.
“First of all, you say that he wants to play that style and then say that it’s not my style. I think Mo was really happy with the style we played last season because that led to us winning the league.”
The Dutch coach went on to explain that football has evolved tactically in recent years and suggested adaptation is necessary for teams hoping to remain competitive at the highest level.
“And I’ve just said that football has changed, football has evolved,” he added.
“But we both again want what’s best for Liverpool and that’s for us to compete for trophies, which we haven’t done this season and which we’ve done last season.”
Slot also praised Salah’s contribution to Liverpool’s recent title success and stressed that the entire squad shares responsibility for maintaining the club’s standards moving forward.
“He and the team, and I was included in that, brought the league title back after five years,” he said.
Looking ahead, Slot insisted Liverpool’s ambition remains unchanged as the club prepares for another push next season.
“And we would like to challenge for that again next season and continue to evolve the team. So that is my take on it.”
The exchange has added further intrigue around Liverpool’s future direction as the club balances maintaining its traditional attacking identity with adapting to the tactical demands of modern football under Slot’s leadership.
