Uncle of Derrick Köhn, Eric Akwasi Agyei, has strongly criticised the decision to leave the defender out of Ghana’s provisional squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting he would not allow his own child to play for the country under the current system.
Speaking in an interview on Peace FM, Agyei reacted angrily to reports suggesting Köhn’s omission was due to an incomplete nationality switch from Germany to Ghana.
He rejected those claims and backed earlier comments made by Derrick Köhn’s brother, Michael, who stated that the nationality switch process had already been completed.
Köhn previously featured in friendly matches for Ghana, but players are required to complete their nationality switch before they can represent a country in official competitions such as the FIFA World Cup.
Agyei suggested there were other reasons behind the defender’s omission, claiming there was foul play involved in the selection process. He further stated that until corruption is fully addressed in Ghana football, he would not allow his own child to represent the country.

“Me Akwasi Agyei, I won’t never ever let my child play for Ghana. It will never happen.”

“My nephew plays regular football for Union Berlin and earns his salary but the nationality switch complications will make a potential move to play for Germany instead more difficult, that’s what worries me not he getting sidelined by Ghana officials in future call ups” he said.
🎥 🇬🇭 “We have destroyed Derrick Arthur Köhn’s future. If anyone is behind his omission, it will not go well for them. This World Cup, we will not go far. Let’s stop the hypocrisy.”
