Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, says Baba Rahman earned his recall to the Black Stars on merit following his inclusion in Ghana’s provisional squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on Channel One TV’s World Cup Central, Asante Twum defended the decision by Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz as debate continues over Rahman’s return after nearly four years away from the national team.

The former Chelsea left back stepped away from international football following heavy criticism, choosing instead to focus on his club career.

Rahman has now been named in Queiroz’s 28 man provisional squad ahead of Union Berlin defender Derrick Arthur Kohn and is currently training with the team ahead of Ghana’s friendly against Wales on June 2.

However, the PAOK player is in line to make the 26-man squad to compete in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and according to Henry Asante Twum, this was done by merit contrary to what Kohn’s uncle raged about foul play connected to his nephew’s omission. (Click highlighted text to read full story)

“In the end it’s the decision of the coach (Carlos Queiroz). Was it done on merit? Yes it was done on merit. Baba (Rahman) had quite a good season. Yes he’s been out of the team for quite some time.”

“Let me place on record that Carlos may have been the one to successfully convince the player to return but when Otto (Addo) was around, he wanted him back. The coach-Carlos Queiroz- calls the shots.” Asante Twum said.
