Matteo Berrettini lost out on qualifying to the semifinals of the 2026 French Open after retiring from his quarterfinal contest against Matteo Arnaldi.

Berretini retired from the contest in the second set as he struggled to move freely on the court; prior to the injury forced retirement, Berrettini was one of the favourites to win the Grand Slam.

Speaking after the game, the Italian player shared his frustrations over the injury that prevented him from potentially winning his first grand slam.

“I’m the last one that wants to retire. I’m so tired of it. I just don’t want to do it, but sometimes you have to do it.”

“A lot of players have done it in the past, and it’s the worst feeling ever, but it’s the right thing to do, because it’s not the last tournament I’m going to play in my life, and I have to think about my future. I have to think about my recovery” Berretini said.

Arnadli will take on Flavio Cobolli in the semifinals on Friday, June 5.
