2024 Olympic Champion Noah Lyles delivered a brilliant performance to finish in first place in the Men’s 100 Metre event at the Diamond League meeting in Rome.
The American sprinter clocked a time of 9.88 seconds, which is a season’s best, to win the race off a trademark strong finish after starting slow out of the blocks.
Lyles beat a strong field that had Africa’s record holder Ferdinand Omanyala, Jamaica’s Ackeem Blake, South Africa’s Akani Simbine and 2020 Olympic gold medalist Marcel Jacobs.
Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme and Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo finished second and third with a time of 9.94 and 9.95 seconds respectively.
Eseme’s time of 9.94 seconds marked a new national record and comes on the back of his gold medal win at the recently held African Senior Athletics Championships in Ghana where he run a time of 10.25 seconds.
Speaking after the race, Lyles delivered a very confident breakdown on the race by stating that,
“I had a great finish. This season might be different but it doesn’t mean the goal is different. I am not showing anywhere to lose.”
“I am here to win. Ten metres before the finish line I knew the race was over and I had already won it. I was thinking about how I was going to celebrate it.”
