Argentina National Men’s Football Team head coach Lionel Scaloni says superstar Lionel Messi’s future with the national team is up to the Inter Miami star.
He said this after Argentina lost 1-0 to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final in a game that was dominated by Spain from start to finish.
Argentina played the game with 10 men from the 93rd minute after Enzo Fernandez was red carded for making a wild challenge.
After leading Argentina to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Scaloni fell short of recording a successful title defence and 39 year old Messi’s future instantly became the biggest talking point after the loss to Spain.
“It was crystal clear to me that he’s going to play up until he decides (not to) do so and his team will support him.”

“I hope that everyone feels proud of him, of what he’s achieved because he’s the best football player ever” Scaloni said.

In his sixth World Cup, Messi scored eight goals and added four assists in eight games.
