Pressure continues to mount on FIFA President Gianni Infantino, with Portugal legend Luis Figo becoming the latest high-profile figure to call for his resignation.
Figo’s intervention comes after Infantino abandoned his controversial proposal to sell a stake in the FIFA World Cup to an investment group led by the brother of the son in law of US President Donald Trump.
The proposal sparked widespread opposition, with several football confederations, including UEFA, urging FIFA to withdraw the plan.
Since the proposal was shelved, Sweden, Wales and Serbia have withdrawn their backing for Infantino’s re-election bid.
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Figo, who represented Portugal at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, said:
“Today I join others from across our game and call for Gianni Infantino to resign as FIFA President. Infantino has debased the office that he promised to elevate.”
