Ghana Black Stars forward Antoine Semenyo had an impressive start to life at Manchester City after joining the club from AFC Bournemouth midway through the 2025-2026 season.
Semenyo’s fine start to life at Man City had him win the Carabao Cup and FA Cup; he scored the winning goal in the FA Cup Final.
However, the Ghana international could have been a Liverpool player had immediate past Liverpool Director of Football Richard Hughes had his way.
The former Bournemouth Technical Director, according to The Athletic, Hughes pushed for Liverpool to sign Semenyo as a replacement for Mohamed Salah.
“Hughes urged the Liverpool hierarchy to sign him for £60million last January, regarding him as a ready-made replacement for Salah, who had indicated a willingness to leave just months into a new two-year contract.”
“Salah’s future was not resolved until March, by which time Semenyo had joined Manchester City and hit the ground running” a section of the report stated.
Liverpool won the 2024-2025 English Premier League title under Hughes who left his role after two seasons to join Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal as the club’s Sporting Director.
Salah joined Turkish side Trabzonspor as a free agent prior to the start of the 2026-2027 season. Semenyo was named in the PFA Team of the Year.
