American sprinter Kenny Bednarek is adamant he belongs in the echelons of the world’s elite 100 metre sprinters.
He said this while reflecting on a double win at the maiden edition of the World Athletics Ultimate Championship that took place in Budapest, Hungary.
Bednarek won the 100 metre final with a time of 9.85 seconds ahead of Oblique Seville and Ronnie Baker, who ran times of 9.90 seconds and 9.93 seconds, respectively.
He went on to clinch gold in his stronger event, the 200 metre race, in a world-leading time of 19.52 seconds ahead of Letsile Tebogo and Courtney Lindsey, who ran times of 19.76 seconds and 19.79 seconds, respectively.
After winning silver at two Olympic Games and two World Championships, Bednarek was relieved that he managed to score gold this time around.
“It means a lot to me, because we had a really tough field, and to be able to come out on top with a really stacked field, it’s definitely something to take note of.”
“I definitely feel like it’s more of a relief, just because silver, silver, silver over the last few years… it just proves that I’m capable of doing it and I belong here” Bednarek said.
