“Don’t demolish Accra Sports Stadium, renovate it instead” – Yaw Preko

Former Ghana international Yaw Preko has called for the Accra Sports Stadium to be renovated rather than demolished, describing the iconic venue as Ghana’s equivalent of Wembley Stadium.

Calls to demolish and rebuild the stadium emerged in late August 2026, with some lawmakers and stakeholders, including Berekum West MP Dickson Kyere-Duah, backing the proposal.

Proponents of a complete rebuild have cited structural challenges, faulty facilities and concerns about the stadium’s suitability for international competitions.

Former National Sports Authority Chairman Prof. Fred Awaah also described the stadium as a “death trap” in an interview with Citi Sports, warning that its deteriorating condition could pose risks to spectators and athletes.

Speaking after the Black Stars’ legends 6-3 defeat to UMB Speed Stars at the Adjiringano Astro Turf, Preko backed calls for the stadium to be preserved.

“The Accra Sports Stadium is our Wembley. We can’t demolish it, but we can break some places and add other things,” Preko said.

The former Anderlecht and Fenerbahçe forward believes authorities can identify sections that require reconstruction and make the necessary additions without completely replacing the historic facility.

The stadium remains approved by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to host international matches as Ghana prepares for upcoming continental commitments.

It is also scheduled to host Ghana’s 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations opening double-header against The Gambia on September 29, 2026.
