The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has increased its annual funding for each of its 54 member associations to $700,000, marking a 33% rise under president Patrice Motsepe’s leadership.

CAF also announced an increase in annual financial support for its zonal unions from $750,000 to $900,000, representing a 20% rise.

The new funding structure forms part of CAF’s stated ambition to strengthen football administration across the continent and help its member associations build more sustainable football systems.

The latest increase continues a series of funding adjustments introduced since Motsepe took office. In 2021, each member association received an annual subvention of $200,000. That figure was subsequently doubled to $400,000 before rising to $525,000 and now $700,000.

The latest allocation represents a substantial increase from the original funding level, giving national football associations access to greater annual financial support for their operations and development priorities.

CAF said the initiative reflects its commitment to helping all 54 member associations develop football to world-class standards while becoming more financially self-sustaining.

The increased funding for zonal unions is also intended to strengthen the regional structures that support football development and administration across Africa.

However, the impact of the additional funding will depend on how individual associations and zonal unions deploy the resources, including their ability to support grassroots football, improve administration and develop the game at different levels.

The announcement adds to CAF’s wider efforts to increase financial support for its members and strengthen the structures responsible for running football across the continent.
