Paul Pogba misses penalty as Manchester United draw 1-1 with Wolves

Manchester United missed the chance to go top of the Premier League as Wolves fought back to claim a 1-1 draw.

Although it puts an end to the Molineux hoodoo for the Red Devils, Paul Pogba had the chance to win the game for the visitors but saw his penalty saved by Rui Patricio.

For Wolves, it is another point gained from their second fixture of the season as Nuno Espirito Santo’s side recovered from a goal down thanks to a stunner from Ruben Neves.

VAR threatened to chalk the Portugal international’s stunning strike off, but thankfully the talk tomorrow morning will all be about the remarkable equaliser.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer handed Daniel James his first start for Manchester United after his goalscoring debut against Chelsea last weekend, and the Wales international made a difficult start.

James was booked for diving by referee Jon Moss as the visitors tried to cut through the Wolves defence, which they managed to do in style with 27 minutes on the clock.

Multiple players were involved in a fast break down the United left, resulting in Rashford sliding in Anthony Martial to rifle a fine finish into the top left-hand corner – his 50th for the club.

Wolves brought on Adama Traore for Matt Doherty at the break – a change that quickly brought about their best opening of the match.

Jesse Lingard missed a cross from Aaron Wan-Bissaka at the other end, before Traore won a free-kick on the edge of the box.

Harry Maguire was angry with the substitute for the way he went down and Raul Jimenez glanced a header off the far post from the resulting set piece.

It was a warning shot across the bows that United failed to heed, with Neves soon sending a beautiful strike through a crowd that went in off the underside of the bar to send Molineux wild.

Delight became anger as referee Jon Moss pointed to his ear as the video assistant referee checked for offside, before the goal was awarded.

United eventually regained their composure and fine footwork from Pogba drew a foul from Wolves captain Conor Coady, with a penalty awarded to United.

Pogba stepped up for the spot-kick and Rui Patricio stopped his thumping effort to the delight of the home faithful.

It was the World Cup winner’s fourth missed penalty in the Premier League since the start of last season – more than any player in the competition over that period.

Leander Dendoncker directed over on a Wolves break and Maguire caused David De Gea a problem with an undercooked back-pass.

Solskjaer brought on Mason Greenwood and Andreas Pereira for the closing stages, but it ended 1-1 at Molineux.
