‘Windows 95 Word Art’ – Ghanaians troll GFA over ‘substandard’ artworks

There’s huge anticipation ahead of Charles Kwablan Akonnor’s first game in charge of the Black Stars, in October.

The friendly against Mali is the first time Ghanaians will get to see the senior national team in action since last November.

In a bid to capitalise on the public fervour ahead of the match, the Ghana Football Association (GFA)’s official Twitter page tweeted a poster which has, unfortunately for the FA, sparked a different discussion on social media.

The artwork features a picture of head coach, C.K Akonnor, above images of captain Andre Ayew and deputy captains, Thomas Partey and Richard Ofori.

The images are superimposed over some text, apparently spelling out “Ghana Black Stars” although the latter two words are mostly hidden.

A tagline of “We are Ready”, curving backward at the bottom of the artwork is placed above the GFA’s hashtags #BringBackTheLove and #IgnitingPassionCreatingWealthfForAll.

At first glance, this seems like a harmless poster but it has attracted the vitriol of Ghanaian football fans on Twitter, who deemed the effort by the FA’s graphics team as extremely unsatisfactory.

I think you should start taking your graphic design serious… This isnt good enough for a whole national team

After the talk died down, the account posted another artwork that started the criticism right back up.

The new artwork coincidentally asks: “are you ready for something brand new?” and features a hand drawing some curtains apart.

Again, the design was not received well at all, with many criticising the FA for apparently not taking their graphics seriously.

Are you ready for something NEW?🤔#BringBackTheLove#Durable pic.twitter.com/pfyCwTJNe1

— Ghana Football Association (@ghanafaofficial) September 28, 2020

The FA should employ a ‘better’ graphic designer. It’s part of re-branding.
