Ghana’s contingent from the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham have arrived safely in the country.

The team made up of nine boxers and officials arrived in the early hours of Wednesday, August 10, 2022.

Team Ghana took nine boxers to Birmingham for the Commonwealth Games with one being a lady by name Ornella Sathoud.

Of the nine Ghanaian boxers, three picked up medals with  two being silver medals and a bronze medal.

The arrival party had the national record holder in the women’s long jump, Deborah Acquah.

She jumped a personal best of 6.94m on her first attempt to win bronze.

On arrival, head trainer Ofori Asare touted his credentials as the only Ghanaian coach to achieve that feat for the country.

He also pleaded with the Ministry of Youth and Sports to pay attention to boxing in the country in order to help transform more lives and bring more glory to Ghana.

Also speaking to Citi Sports, the president of the Ghana Boxing Association, Abraham Kotei Neequaye  admonished the government of Ghana to pay attention to boxing.

“Since I become president, our boxers have excelled greatly and have achieved a lot. You can also see today that these medallists have arrived in Ghana, and it’s beautiful. It’s a great thing. I please with the government to give us [boxing] half the attention and resources they give football,” he said.

“You don’t need any more proof that boxing is the only sport that had brought us more glory. 10 world championship titles, and over 30 medals in competitions. We are running without funds, and we plead with the government to pay attention to us and give us more resources, so we can achieve more,” he added.

The athletes also shared their thoughts on their individual performances at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and thanked Ghanaians for their support and love.
