GPL set to resume as injunction application filed by Ashgold is dismissed

The High Court has dismissed the interlocutory injunction on the Ghana Premier League.

This follows an injunction application filed by Ashantigold Football Club.

The case which lasted two weeks led to the suspension of the Betpawa Premier League after Matchday 3.

Ashantigold argued that their demotion to Division Two for Matchday is unfair and prayed for the court to halt the league and compel GFA to give them a fair hearing.

However, the GFA believed that a further suspension of the league will have a bigger consequence on Ghana football.

In her ruling, Judge Barbara Tetteh-Charway indicated that on the balance of hardship, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) will suffer more than Ashantigold should the league remain on hold.

The Court added it’s a world cup year and football activities need to go on for Ghana to have a successful tournament.

The application for an interlocutory injunction was dismissed, paving way for the resumption of the 2022/2023 betPawa Premier League from Matchday 4.

Speaking after the ruling, GFA President, Kurt Okraku said:

“The Football Association will respect the wise ruling from the court. Football is back and I want to thank everybody who has believed that Ghana football can be resurrected, and is in the right way. I want to thank everybody in the football ecosystem who gave us the responsibility to contribute our quota toward the development of Ghana Football. Indeed, on God”.

The Ghana Football Association subsequently requested GHC300,000 for halting the league for twenty-one days.

However, the Court directed Ashantigold to pay a cost of GHC20, 000 for damages.
