All six Ghanaian boxers who participated in the 2023 IBA Boxing Championship in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, have been eliminated from the competition.

Amadu Mohammed, the sole quarter-finalist, suffered a 0-5 defeat against Makhmud Sabyrkhan from Kazakhstan, ending his journey in the tournament.

This defeat prevented him from progressing to the semifinals, also known as the “money zone,” where substantial cash prizes awaited, including $200,000 for gold, $100,000 for silver, and $50,000 for bronze.

Before his elimination, Amadu Mohammed secured victories against George Molwantwa of Botswana in the Round of 16 and Rejeki Manalu from Indonesia in the previous round in the Bantamweight division.

His compatriot, Alfred Kotey made it to the Round of 16 but was defeated 0-5 by Lasha Guruli from Georgia, following his earlier triumph over Mohammed Sillah of Sierra Leone.

Theophilus Allotey and Abdul Wahid Omar were both eliminated in the Round of 32.

Allotey lost 4-1 to Patrick Chinyemba from Zambia in the Flyweight division, while Omar started with a commanding 5-0 win over Tadej Cernoga from Slovenia in the Lightweight category but was subsequently overpowered by France’s Sofiane Oumiha.

Abraham Mensah, competing in the Featherweight division, was eliminated in the Round of 64 by Sarawut Sukthet from Thailand.

Joseph Commey, in the light welterweight division, also bowed out in the Last 64, succumbing to Richard Kovacs of Hungary.

Overall, it was a good experience for the Black Bombers under Head Coach, Ofori Asare, ahead of the 2023 African Games and 2024 Olympic Games.
