Representatives from the US Embassy in Ghana and Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) earlier today concluded a three day sports leadership program for Ghanaian footballers.

Players from Taking Over Football Club and Faith Ladies Football Club participated in the program held at the Dansoman Astro Turf.

The program was aimed at equipping and empowering young athletes with sports leadership skills to be proponents of social consciousness in their communities.

Speaking to Citi Sports, Executive Director of the Center for Sports Leadership at VCU, Carrie LeCrom, stated, “Sports is a very powerful tool to bring people together. We are working really closely with the players out here with both clubs to think about all the many ways we could use football for peace building efforts.”

Coordinator of the project, Ian Osei Owusu, added, “the whole idea is to see what these students can gain from these sessions; the sports, the education of it and how to impact lives.”

On his part, Faith Ladies Public Relations Officer Francis Mawutor said, “I realized it-this program-goes far beyond football and we can use to build our communities.”
