Ghana’s fastest man Benjamin Azamati will race the reigning World Athletics Champion Noah Lyles for a place in the final of the 2024 Olympic Games Men’s 100 Metres.
The semifinals of the high profile event takes place on Sunday, August 4 with the first of three heats commencing at 18:05 GMT. The top two finishers in each heat progress automatically to the final with the two fastest time holders progressing too to complete the field.
Azamati qualified to the semis after finishing second in his heat with a time of 10.08 seconds behind Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson’s time of 10.00 seconds while Lyles progressed with a second place finish in his heat with a time of 10.04 seconds. Lyles won the 2023 World Championship with a time of 9.83 seconds.
In Heat 3, Abdul-Rasheed Saminu of Ghana has been drawn against 2021 World Athletics Champion Fred Kerley, Africa’s record holder Ferdinand Omanyala and Kishane Thompson is the world’s fastest this year after clocking a time of 9.77 seconds.
