Dreams Football Club has issued an official statement addressing recent comments made by Accra Lions FC following their Ghana Premier League (GPL) Week 16 encounter on January 5, 2025, at the Tuba AstroTurf Park.
In the statement, Dreams FC emphasized their commitment to upholding integrity, professionalism, and fair play in Ghanaian football.
However, the club expressed concern over what they describe as “hypocrisy and double standards” in how some stakeholders choose to address issues within the league.
Dreams FC pointed out that while Accra Lions highlighted their impressive runner-up finish in last season’s league, their recent comments could undermine the very competition they performed well in.
Dreams FC questioned the timing and intent behind the accusations, noting that refereeing controversies are part of football globally, even in leagues that utilize advanced technology.
The statement further acknowledged that officiating errors can benefit or harm any team. However, Dreams FC stressed that grievances should be handled through appropriate channels.
The club encouraged stakeholders with evidence of wrongdoing to follow official procedures to seek redress, rather than resorting to public outbursts that could tarnish the image of the league.
Dreams FC also referenced Accra Lions’ previous match against Hearts of Oak, highlighting what they described as a selective approach to officiating concerns. The club found it “strange” that Accra Lions did not publicly acknowledge officiating errors that may have benefited them in that instance.
Additionally, Dreams FC denied awareness of any formal complaints regarding the officiating of their recent match against Accra Lions, further questioning the motivations behind the rival club’s comments.
The statement expressed particular concern over reports that some Accra Lions officials physically confronted referees during the match, describing this as alarming and unacceptable behaviour.
Dreams FC suggested that their association with the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has made them an “easy target” for criticism.
They also condemned the “calculated” social media commentary by Accra Lions before, during, and after the match, calling it an outdated and unprofessional tactic to shift blame and distract from internal shortcomings.
The club highlighted their recent achievements, including reaching the semi-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup, as evidence of their dedication to advancing Ghanaian football on the global stage.
Dreams FC urged stakeholders to recognize these efforts rather than attempt to discredit them.
In closing, Dreams FC reaffirmed that the match was played in a competitive but fair spirit.
The club noted that the narrow victory did not fully reflect their dominance, pointing to their missed scoring opportunities.
They called on all GPL clubs to promote confidence in the league to attract sponsorship and investment, warning against divisive actions driven by personal agendas.
Dreams FC concluded by rejecting any attempts to use the club to further external interests and encouraged others to do the same, calling for unity and professionalism across the league.
