Minister of Finance Designate, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has stated that the betting tax will be scrapped as early as the presentation of his first budget.
He made this statement on the controversial tax placed on sports winnings during his appearance at the Parliamentary Vetting of the Minister Designate for Finance, Energy and Justice on Monday, January 13.
The tax was implemented in August 2023 after the then Ghana Government adopted the Income Tax (Amendment) Act, 2023 (Act 1094).
The implementation gave the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) the right to take 10% of all gambling platform wins including sports related one.
At the over four hour vetting engagement by the Vetting Committee, Dr. Ato Forson was asked about his plans concerning his direction on the tax that many have called to be repealed where he stated,

“I insist that, that tax must be abolished and as Minister of Finance, my first budget, I will abolish the betting tax” Dr. Forson said and added that scrapping the tax won’t affect the economy.
