“Sports isn’t just about football”– GBA President challenges incoming Sports Minister

The President of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), Abraham Kotei Neequaye, has cautioned the incoming Sports Minister against focusing solely on football.

He urged the appointee, expected to be named by President John Dramani Mahama, to prioritize all sports sectors equally.

The race to appoint Ghana’s next Sports Minister has sparked widespread discussions, with notable names like Nii Lante Vanderpuye (former Sports Minister), Wisdom Kobla Woyome (Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports during the eighth parliament), Dr. Randy Abbey, Rashid Pelpuo, and others emerging as potential candidates.

In recent weeks, these individuals have been at the centre of public debate, as stakeholders and the public speculate on who will assume this crucial role.

Many stakeholders have voiced their expectations, calling for accountability, transparency, and balanced attention across all sports disciplines.

In an exclusive interview with Citi Sports, Kotei Neequaye emphasized the importance of equal attention for all sports, warning against neglecting non-football disciplines.

It would be a good job for that minister not to rely on only football.

You have to pay attention. It’s not about football and football and football and football. Sorry, the football fans and the administrators, but we believed that they’ve taken too much.

And when it happens that way, it looks like we are not happy.

I know some discipline have prayed that football, they should go and lose.

Thinking that if they lose, the minister will pay attention to the other federations.

You understand? But if it becomes a level ground, why would you pray that you understand? So let us make it a level ground.

Of course, whether you like it or not, there’s going to be top three, top four or any other thing.
