Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has commended Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey for the goal he scored in Arsenal’s win over Manchester City that he described as the “turning point” in the game.
Arteta said this in an interview after Arsenal smashed Man City 5-1 in the biggest English Premier League game over the past weekend.
Partey scored a little over a minute after Man City’s Erling Haaland’s goal in the 55th minute; Partey’s shot cannoned off Man City defender John Stones and beat Stefan Ortega in Man City’s goal to restore Arsenal’s lead.
Arsenal went on to score three more goals and Arteta shared in Pep Guardiola’s assessment that had Partey’s goal not come quickly as it did, the game could have been different.
“Yeah, that’s another thing that went our way, because, emotionally, I think that was a turning point, we reacted so quickly, had a bit of luck in that action, and that set the tone for the team in the stadium as well, to go and win the game.”

“After that I think the team took a different level, growing confidence, they started to control the game much better and dominate certain areas much better, and we went and win it from there.”

The goal against Man City is Partey’s third in 23 league appearances in the 2024-2025 season.
