Two-time bantamweight world champion Joseph Agbeko has reaffirmed boxing’s vital role in Ghanaian sports, despite the recent challenges that have plagued the discipline.

Ghana’s boxing team started strong at the 2023 African Games, clinching seven medals, including gold, in the early stages of the competition. However, the momentum faltered, leading to a historic low, for the first time in over two decades, no Ghanaian boxer secured qualification for the Olympic Games.

This stark reality underscores the ongoing struggles in the sport. Yet, Agbeko believes that rising talents like Mohammed Amadu could be instrumental in revitalizing Ghana’s presence on the global stage.

Speaking exclusively to Citi Sports, Agbeko acknowledged these setbacks but remained steadfast in his belief that Ghanaian boxing continues to make its mark internationally.

“I would say that boxing is playing its part in sports in Ghana, and it’s obvious that in every high competition, boxing is always proving to the world that we are good. I would say that in regards to the young fighter, this is the beginning of greatness in his life. Being this young, winning such an award, he’s a champion in the making. You can tell from his achievements.”

Agbeko also emphasized the role of experienced boxers like himself in nurturing the next generation, ensuring that Ghanaian boxing reaches even greater heights.

“I’ll say that we are playing our part to contribute to the youths coming into boxing.”
