President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has stated that a National Recreation Day will be celebrated monthly to highlight the importance of recreational activities in the sports space.
He said this in his first State of the Nation Address delivered at the Ninth Parliament of Ghana in the Fourth Republic on Thursday, February 27.
While addressing wide-ranging issues affecting the country, President Mahama highlighted the importance of recreation in sports by his move to restructure the Sports Ministry to the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.
“To acknowledge the significance of recreation, we will launch a National Recreation Day. This will be a monthly initiative centred on community engagement alongside an annual National Recreation Festival. These initiatives will encourage keep fit activities and promote active lifestyles it will promote traditional games and strengthen community bonds” President Mahama stated.

President Mahama recently appointed Kofi Adams as Minister of Sports and Recreation and has tasked him to hold the Ghana Football Association accountable over the running of national football teams, particularly the Black Stars.
