Brentford boosted their hopes of European qualification for the first time in their history with a dramatic 4-3 victory over a much-rotated Manchester United side at the Gtech Community Stadium.
The result lifts Thomas Frank’s side to ninth in the Premier League, just one point behind Bournemouth, with three matches remaining. In stark contrast, United suffered their 16th league defeat of the campaign ; equalling their worst tally in a single season since 1989/90.
Since Ruben Amorim took the reins on November 11, United have won just six league matches only relegated sides Ipswich (3), Leicester (3), and Southampton (1) have managed fewer over the same period.

United took the lead against the run of play when Mason Mount tucked home Alejandro Garnacho’s low cross. But Brentford soon struck back in bizarre fashion ; Mikkel Damsgaard’s close-range shot ricocheted off Luke Shaw and goalkeeper Altay Bayindir before trickling into the net.

Moments later, the hosts completed the turnaround. United hesitated, expecting a stoppage after Matthijs de Ligt went down injured, but referee Anthony Taylor waved play on. Christian Norgaard seized the moment to loft a cross for Kevin Schade, who headed in Brentford’s second.

The Bees nearly made it 3-1 before the break, but Bayindir pulled off a crucial save to deny Norgaard’s glancing header from a Damsgaard free-kick.
United emerged with more intent after the interval, yet Brentford extended their lead when Schade nodded home a pinpoint cross from Bryan Mbeumo. Then, Michael Kayode dazzled down the flank before setting up Yoane Wissa to calmly slot in a fourth, confirmed after a brief VAR check.

Garnacho fired a stunning strike from the edge of the box to reduce the deficit, and Amad Diallo’s deflected shot off Sepp van den Berg set up a tense finale. But Brentford held firm for their third straight win, keeping their fairytale European push alive.
