On Saturday, June 14, 2025, Ghana joined the rest of the world in celebrating Olympic Day, a global tradition that began in 1948 to honour the birth of the modern Olympic Movement and promote sport for all.
In Accra, the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) brought the celebration to life with a vibrant community walk that showcased the power of sport to unite and inspire.
The day began at dawn at the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, where athletes, coaches, students, and supporters gathered beneath the towering statue of Ghana’s first president.
As the morning sun rose over the capital, the crowd set off on a symbolic walk through Osu Castle and into central Accra, all to the lively sounds of a brass band.

The procession ended at the Accra Sports Stadium, where the energy only grew. Schoolchildren wowed the crowd with synchronised aerobics routines, and members of the National Sports Authority joined the GOC president and board in spirited demonstrations of fitness and fun, all under a blazing morning sky.

GOC President Richard Akpokavie expressed his excitement about the day’s success and shared plans to expand the celebration beyond the capital.
This will possibly go to other regions so that they also experience Olympic Day, so it’s not only based in Accra. We’re putting a few structures in place ; forming our committees and laying out a plan so we can start working effectively.

“We want it to be very big and possibly go to the other regions, it will not just be in Accra” – Richard Akpokavie

National Sports Authority Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah echoed the sentiment.
Olympic Day is more than a celebration, it’s a call to action.
We want every Ghanaian to discover the joy of movement and believe that they, too, can be champions in life.

“We are not here for ourselves, we are here for the good of the sports and to unify or bring unity amongst ourselves” – Yaw Ampfo Ankrah

By the end of the event, one message stood tall: Olympic values like friendship, excellence, and respect aren’t reserved for elite athletes; they belong to everyone. And in Ghana, on this joyful morning, those values lit up the streets of Accra.
