Ghana Black Queens goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan proved to be the heroine once again in a penalty shootout with her latest feat earning Ghana the bronze medal at the 2024 CAF Women’s AFCON in Morocco.

Konlan atoned for her mistake that directly led to South Africa’s goal in regulation time by making two saves in the shootout to earn Ghana’s first medal at the continental championship since 2016.

The game ended 1-1 at the end of regulation time with Nonhlanhla Mthandi scoring for South Africa in the 45th minute but teammate Andile Dlamini conceded an own goal in the 68th minute to level the game.

In the penalty shootout, Ghana’s Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah missed her attempt before Konlan came up big for the Black Queens with two stops. Konlan made penalty saves in Ghana’s 4-2 win over Algeria in the quarterfinals.

Nancy Amoh scored the winning kick and went on to celebrate by paying homage to former Liverpool striker Diogo Jota by imitating the ex-Portuguese player’s goal celebration. Jota passed away last month in a car accident.

Ghana won bronze in the 2016 edition and had failed to progress beyond the group stage prior to this year’s edition. Ghana exacted revenge on South Africa after losing 2-0 in its opening game.
