Speaker of Parliament successfully launches second edition of Democracy Cup slated for August 29

Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, on Thursday, July 24, 2025, officially launched the second edition of Parliament’s Democracy Cup at the D.F. Annan Auditorium.

Introduced in 2024, the Democracy Cup is a parliamentary initiative that utilises the power of sports, particularly football, to promote democratic values, national unity, and peaceful coexistence.

The launch attracted key figures including former Black Stars players, Members of Parliament, and Executive Council members of the Ghana Football Association.

Speaking at the launch, Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, reaffirmed his strong support for the initiative, declaring that the Democracy Cup has come to stay and will remain a permanent fixture in Ghana’s democratic and sporting calendar.

I want to affirm this laudable initiative and assure you that it is here to stay .
It is here to make a lasting impact on our Democracy development .

The launch of this second edition , is a powerful testament to what we can achieve as a nation.

A key feature of the 2025 edition is the investment of part of the proceeds into professional FIFA certified trading for physical education teachers .

The second edition of the Democracy Cup will feature a highly anticipated clash between Ghanaian football giants Accra Hearts of Oak and their city rivals Accra Great Olympics at the Accra Sports Stadium.

In addition to the headline fixture, a special curtain-raiser match will see a Parliament Select Side take on a team made up of former Black Stars players, adding extra excitement to the occasion.
