President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, has praised the Black Queens for their performance at the ongoing 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), describing it as a testament to the growing investment in women’s football in the country.
The Black Queens began their 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign with a 2-0 defeat to South Africa but bounced back strongly with a hard-fought draw against Mali.
They followed up with a crucial victory over Tanzania, which secured their place in the quarter-finals, where they edged past Algeria to book a spot in the semi-finals of the tournament.

Speaking at the launch of the second edition of Parliament’s Democracy Cup at the D.F. Annan Auditorium, Okraku highlighted the strides made in the women’s game, crediting the team’s progress to deliberate efforts by stakeholders to develop the sport at all levels.
Honorable Speaker of Parliament, just to take us back into time, into history, the first senior national team to ever qualify Ghana to a senior World Cup was the Black queens. And that happened in 1999.
They first qualified Ghana to the senior world cup. They have shown to the world that when you plan, when you invest systematically, and when you have your country behind you, you are likely to be successful.
What the girls showed is a commitment of a team, a team that is united and a team that is prepared to shed their last blood to defend the red, gold, and green color.
See you soon @EnMaroc 👋🏽

The Black Queens narrowly missed out on a place in the final after a hard-fought loss to host nation Morocco.
The Atlas Lionesses will now face Nigeria’s Super Falcons in what promises to be a thrilling final, while Ghana will battle South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in the third-place playoff.
