President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Richard Akpokavie, has described the just-ended CAA Region II Seniors Athletics Championships as an important platform for Ghanaian athletes to put their training into practice.
Team Ghana ended the two-day event with 3 gold, 11 silver, and 9 bronze medals, finishing behind rivals Nigeria, who topped the medal table with 25 medals and a stronger gold tally.
Speaking on the sidelines of the competition, Akpokavie stressed the importance of such events in the growth of athletes.
“It was a very good competition, giving young athletes the opportunity to compete. It’s always good because if you only train without competing, it’s not enough. You need to compete to know whether your training is effective, and then you can improve where necessary,” he explained.
CAA Region II Seniors Athletics Championships: “We should be alarmed, with Nigeria, because they invest in sports more than we do, so what we should be doing is to push the government to support as well” – Richard Akpokavie.
