The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has revealed that government is set to establish a dedicated sports fund aimed at addressing the persistent financial challenges faced by Ghanaian athletes and federations.
Speaking at the Africa Junior Weightlifting Championships, the Minister said Cabinet has already approved the proposal and a bill has been prepared to be laid before Parliament.
Cabinet of Ghana has approved the sports fund proposal and a bill has been prepared to be laid before Parliament. This will establish a structured, transparent and sustainable financing mechanism for Ghana sports,” Mr. Adams explained.
He added that the initiative will help resolve the long-standing funding constraints in Ghana’s sporting sector, strengthen athlete development pathways, and provide support for federations to host and compete more consistently on the international stage.

Once we do this, we will be able to support all these least-financed federations appropriately for them to compete without complaining of funding
Mr. Adams also expressed confidence that Parliament will throw its full weight behind the bill once it is tabled.
I know the way the president has always supported sports. When this bill comes to Parliament, he will rally his lieutenant behind him to support it solidly, and we will pass it under certificate of urgency
If approved, the sports fund is expected to mark a turning point for lesser-financed disciplines like weightlifting, athletics, and swimming, which have often struggled with limited resources compared to football.
