King’s Baton Relay arrives in Ghana on August 8 ahead of 2026 Commonwealth Games

Ghana is set to welcome the prestigious King’s Baton Relay on August 8, 2025, as part of preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

The King’s Baton Relay is a symbolic event that promotes unity, friendly competition, and environmental sustainability across the 74 Commonwealth nations and territories.

This year’s edition introduces a unique twist: each participating country will receive a baton to decorate and customise, highlighting its rich cultural heritage.

Ghana’s participation in the relay is a reflection of the country’s dedication to promoting sports, cultural pride, and environmental consciousness—particularly efforts to combat plastic pollution in marine environments.

The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has lined up a series of commemorative activities on August 8, 9, and 12, including plastic clean-ups, cultural celebrations, community and student engagements, as well as courtesy calls on traditional leaders and dignitaries.

Among the notable figures expected to be involved is President John Dramani Mahama.

President of Commonwealth Sports-Ghana, Richard Akpokavie, described the event as a major opportunity to exhibit Ghana’s cultural depth while contributing to a global cause.

“We are excited to participate in the King’s Baton Relay and contribute to the global effort in reducing plastic pollution and instilling Commonwealth values in Ghanaian youth and athletes,” he said.

The relay continues to serve as a bridge connecting communities through sport, sustainability, and shared traditions ahead of the Glasgow 2026 Games.
