Former GFA Executive Council member and organiser of the Gbese Mantse Peace Cup, Samuel Anim Addo, has revealed that this year’s Homowo Peace Cup will be played in honour of the eight prominent Ghanaians who tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash last week.

The accident claimed the lives of:

  • Dr. Edward Omane Boamah – Minister for Defence
  • Dr. Alhaji Murtala Muhammed – MP for Tamale Central, Minister for Environment, Science & Technology
  • Alhaji Muniru Mohammed – Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator
  • Dr. Samuel Sarpong – Vice Chairman of the NDC
  • Samuel Aboagye – Former Parliamentary Candidate
  • Sqn. Leader Peter Bafemi Anala
  • Flying Officer Twum Ampadu
  • Sgt. Ernest Addo Mensah

Anim Addo disclosed that there will be a special surprise during Sunday’s match to pay tribute to these “great fallen heroes,” as well as a young girl who recently lost her life in a tragic river accident.

“None of us wanted this to happen, and it affected all of us deeply. But we have to move on. On Sunday, we will use the game to honour these great fallen heroes and the young girl who also perished on the river. “

He also stressed the importance of sports tourism in promoting Ghana’s image globally, linking the Peace Cup to international best practices.

In many countries, there is a dedicated tourism and sports visa because sports can unite even rivals and project a nation positively. If you connect culture, values, and traditions with sports, you can showcase your country to the world” Anim Addo noted, citing the example of the historic Olympic match between Iran and the USA.

With the Homowo Peace Cup set to draw football fans from across the country, organisers hope the event will not only foster unity and celebration but also serve as a lasting tribute to those who have passed.
