The 2025 KGL Foundation Millennium Marathon lived up to its billing as a historic spectacle, drawing thousands of athletes and spectators on Saturday morning.

The event, which doubled as a celebration of the KGL Foundation’s 5th anniversary, witnessed a clean sweep by Kenyan runners in the men’s and women’s 21km races.

The marathon featured both a 21km long race and a 5km short race, attracting professional athletes, casual runners, senior high school students, and dignitaries from Ghana and across Africa.

The starting point was the forecourt of Access Bank’s Osu Oxford Street branch, with both categories finishing at the iconic Black Star Square.

Kenya reaffirmed its dominance in long-distance running, clinching all three podium spots in both the men’s and women’s 21km races.

Gilbert Kiprotich emerged champion in the men’s category with a blistering time of 1:00:59, ahead of Alfred Cherunoi (1:01:04) and Paul Eyanae (1:02:12).

In the women’s race, Hympha Kiteta took gold in 1:07:42, followed by Lucy Ndambuki (1:10:25) and Eupke Muchiri (1:13:00).

Ghana, however, asserted its strength in the 5km category, sweeping the medals in both divisions. Abotsi Daniel Gawuga, Emmanuel Kwatey, and Germain K. Dzorgbesi claimed the top three positions in the men’s race, while Anai Jennifer, Tuolong Rener, and Bramah Rabiatu secured gold, silver, and bronze in the women’s event.

CEO of the KGL Foundation, Elliot Dadey, expressed delight at the growth of the marathon and the Foundation’s journey since its inception.

To be honest, it’s been an amazing journey.

We started from nothing and now operate in every region of the country.

I knew the marathon would be big, but I didn’t imagine it becoming this huge.

It’s inspiring to see such an overwhelming turnout,” he said.

The Director General of the National Sports Authority, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, who also participated in the 5km race, commended the KGL Foundation for successfully staging the event.

He assured participants of an even bigger marathon in the years ahead.

Winners in all categories received trophies and cash prizes from the KGL Foundation.

The KGL Foundation, the Corporate Social Responsibility arm of the KGL Group, continues to impact marginalised Ghanaian communities through initiatives in Sports, Health, Arts and Culture, Youth Empowerment, and Education.
