The Hearts of Oak shot-stopper was one of Ghana’s standout performers, keeping five clean sheets and conceding only once throughout the qualifiers as the Black Stars booked their ticket to next year’s World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.

Speaking in an interview with Citi Sports after Ghana’s qualification, Schäfer revealed that Asare’s selection was the result of deliberate scouting and teamwork within the technical team.
“We watched matches, and we said we need a goalkeeper, and it was Benjamin Asare, but we have to compliment the Goalkeeper’s Coach,” Schäfer said.
He commended both Asare’s discipline and the goalkeeping department for maintaining high standards, adding that the player’s rise is an example of Ghana’s growing confidence in home-based talent.
Asare, 32, made his debut for the national team in March 2025 and quickly established himself as Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper under coach Otto Addo, producing solid performances against Chad, Madagascar, and the Central African Republic.
His consistency has earned admiration from fans and football pundits, with many hailing his story as a source of inspiration for players in the domestic league.
