The party was set to go deep into the night to celebrate another milestone for Cristiano Ronaldo until Dominik Szoboszlai showed up with a late goal.
The Liverpool midfielder’s goal in the 91st minute got Hungary to pull off a 2-2 draw with Portugal away from home and cancel out Cristiano Ronaldo’s brace.
Scoring twice in the game moved Ronaldo to first place on the list of players with the most goals scored in FIFA World Cup qualifiers ever.
He moved past Guatemala striker Carlos Ruiz who has 39 goals to his credit into first place with Ronaldo’s strikes moving him to 40 goals.
His scoring production against Hungary also moved him closer to reaching the 1000th goal mark; the Portuguese superstar has 948 goals to his name.

A win over Hungary would have all but qualified Portugal to the 2026 FIFA World Cup but Ronaldo believes that despite the draw, Portugal is close to achieving qualification.

“We’re getting closer and closer to our goal! Let’s go, Portugal!” he wrote on his X (formerly Twitter) page after the game.
