Black Stars midfielder Francis Abu is set to be out of action for an extensive period after picking up a gruesome leg injury.

Abu suffered what looked like a broken leg in Ghana’s 2-0 loss to Japan in the 2025 Kirin Challenge Cup; the former Cercle Brugge player was replaced in the 56th minute by Alidu Seidu due to the injury.

In his attempt to block a shot from Japan’s Ao Tanaka, Abu’s leg close to the ankle area, snapped forcing him to be replaced.

After the game, Black Stars head coach Otto Addo described the injury as “a really serious one” and commiserated with the midfielder. (Click highlighted text to read full story)

In a corresponding move, Abu’s French Ligue 1 side FC Toulouse announced a statement pledging their support to the Ghana international who joined the club prior to the start of the 2025-2026 season.

“We will be by your side to help you recover as quickly as possible” a section of the statement read.
