Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim says taking precaution was the reason behind his decision to take off Mason Mount early in the team’s win over Newcastle United on Boxing Day.

Mason Mount played the first half in Man United’s 1-0 win over Newcastle United and impressed but was taken off at half time and replaced with Jack Fletcher-son of former Man United midfielder Darren Fletcher. The older Fletcher was at Old Trafford to see his son play in the game.

With Man United missing a handful of players including Bruno Fernandes through injury, Amorim said to Sky Sports that Mount was taken off to avoid potentially losing more players to injury.

“He-Mason Mount- felt something at half-time. He wanted to go, and that is also a good thing.”

“He wanted to go in the second half, but cannot lose more players, and if you are not 100 per cent, Jack [Fletcher] did a very good job.”

“Clean sheet, back four, so I think I don’t need a press conference. I think everything [is covered], Kobbie Mainoo is injured, all the subjects, and we can go home to enjoy the Boxing Day I think.”
