The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has questioned the basis of the latest International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) rankings that placed the Ghana Premier League (GPL) 100th globally.
His comments follow the release of the IFFHS rankings, which initially placed the GPL 94th before dropping it further down the list.
According to Asante Twum, understanding the criteria behind the research is crucial, as it would help administrators take informed steps to improve the league.
Speaking exclusively to Citi Sports, GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum said the Association is seeking clarity on the data, indicators, and methodology used in compiling the rankings.
I would like to know when the last research was done, the updates that came out of it, and what went into this particular research that resulted in Ghana’s position
As someone who pays attention to data collection, having that information helps shape the discussion and gives the public the right context.

He explained that access to the full data would also allow policymakers and administrators to better appreciate the work done by the researchers and understand the final outcome of the rankings.
Once I have these materials available, it puts me in a better position to appreciate the work they have done and what went into the final output of the research

Asante Addo stressed that while the GFA acknowledges the challenges facing the Ghana Premier League, it is unfair to draw conclusions without clarity on the assessment areas.
We are competing with leagues that are strong in image rights, branding, production, stadium facilities, visibility, and overall product appreciation
So it is difficult to just jump to the conclusion that the Ghana League is ranked 100th in the world without knowing what went into that research.

He further questioned whether key aspects such as coaching, player development, fan engagement, match production, and television visibility were considered in the rankings.
What did the research say about coaching? About player development? Fan patronage? Production and visibility of the games?
Research comes with data, and data comes from collecting different materials.

Despite the concerns, Asante Addo reaffirmed the GFA’s commitment to improving the domestic league.
Leadership is about solving problem
Despite the challenges, we remain focused on improving the Ghana Premier League and ensuring it is rated among the best in the world.
