Ruben Amorim has publicly demanded the autonomy to manage Manchester United without interference, insisting he is more than just a coach.

Speaking after Friday’s 1–1 draw at Leeds United, Amorim delivered a pointed message to the club hierarchy, saying:
I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach. That is clear. I know my name is not Tuchel, it’s not Conte, it’s not Mourinho, but I’m the manager of Manchester United. And it’s going to be like this for 18 months, or when the board decides to change. I’m not going to quit. I will do my job until another guy comes to replace me.

The Portuguese coach suggested senior figures had encroached on his responsibilities  something he says would not happen at other Premier League clubs.

In every department ;  the scouting department, the sporting director  they need to do their job. I will do mine for 18 months and then we move on. That was the deal

Amorim also hinted that the club has become too sensitive to criticism, referencing former pundit Gary Neville:

“If people cannot handle the Gary Nevilles and the criticism of everything, we need to change the club.”

Appointed as head coach in November 2024, succeeding Erik ten Hag, Amorim remains confident in United’s direction despite one win in their last five league games. He is next scheduled to address the media on Tuesday ahead of a trip to Burnley.
