Liam Rosenior has emerged as the leading contender to succeed Enzo Maresca as Chelsea head coach following the Italian’s sudden departure amid growing internal tensions at the club.

Maresca, 45, left Stamford Bridge on Thursday after his relationship with the club’s hierarchy and ownership broke down, bringing an abrupt end to his tenure just over a year after his appointment.

Chelsea have already begun the process of identifying a replacement, with sources indicating Rosenior is currently the frontrunner  though the club is understood to be considering other options.

The 41-year-old Englishman is currently in charge of Strasbourg, a club owned by BlueCo, the same investment consortium that completed the takeover of Chelsea in 2022. Rosenior is said to have strong backing internally at Chelsea, and preparations are already under way to identify potential successors at Strasbourg should his move materialize.

Porto head coach Francesco Farioli has also been mentioned as a possible candidate, while Chelsea’s previous managerial search offers clues to the club’s thinking. Before appointing Maresca in 2024, the Blues interviewed Roberto De Zerbi, Kieran McKenna and Thomas Frank, who has since moved from Brentford to Tottenham.

Andoni Iraola and Marco Silva have been linked with the Chelsea role in the past, although it remains unclear whether either is part of the current process. What is clear, however, is that Chelsea are unwilling to deviate from their established playing philosophy  a stance that makes a move for Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner highly unlikely.

With uncertainty surrounding the dugout, it is not yet known who will take charge of Chelsea for Sunday’s Premier League clash against Manchester City. Under-21s head coach Calum McFarlane will handle media duties ahead of the match at Friday’s pre-game press conference.

Meanwhile, a social media post from goalkeeper Robert Sánchez has suggested that Maresca’s backroom staff have also departed the club, underlining the scale of the reset now under way at Stamford Bridge.
